A no spoilers review of ‘Foundation’ season 1 episode 2: “Preparing to Live”

No need to panic, just a little space turbulence.

After an incredible pilot, the obvious question for Foundation became how will it’s awesomeness carry over to episode 2.

The second episode, titled “Preparing to Live”, is still watchable and enjoyable, but the “Game of Thrones-in-space” comparisons become harder to make, as this Apple Original drama at times already finds itself – lost – in space.

The romance arc, featured heavily and early on in this episode,, feels rushed and unearned. So much so, that in the episode’s early moments, I was erroneously wondering whether months of time had passed since episode 1.

In Foundation’s first episode, “The Emperor’s Peace”, there’s a clean, thrilling narrative for 60 minutes. Episode 2, “Preparing to Live”, on the other hand, feels largely muddled and aimless in its time set aboard an interstellar ship.

Many scenes feel disjointed and hollow, and even the episode’s off-ship story focused on the Empire, felt dragged out.

With that said, there are still more than enough visual treats, and continued strong performances from lead actors, that Foundation remains an enjoyable viewing experience.

One positive thing this episode confirms, in a way that remains reminiscent to “Game of Thrones”, is to expect radical, season-shifting events to unfold over the course of any given episode.

It seems that a “highly watchable mixed bag” is about where we should put our expectations going forward, for now at least.

We’ll have to keep tuning in each Friday to see how well the stars align for Foundation in the long term.
