SIMP FACTS:
- NETFLIX INTERNAL DOCUMENT VALUES ‘SQUID GAME’ AT ROUGHLY $900 MILLION.
- AT LEAST 132-MILLION PEOPLE STARTED THE SERIES WITHIN 23 DAYS.
- ITS THE MOST WATCHED NETFLIX TITLE OF ALL-TIME.
You could do a lot with $1 billion. It’s also how much you might need if you want to buy the rights for ‘Squid Game‘ from Netflix.
Bloomberg reported today on an internal Netflix document that estimates ‘Squid Game’ to be worth somewhere in the realm of $900 million for the streaming service.
Comparatively — the report reveals the nine-episode debut season cost the company just $21 million to produce.
It’s unclear how Netflix arrived at the near-$1 billion figure, as the company uses an undisclosed algorithm to help determine the value of its shows.
A large factor behind that value, of course, comes down to how many people watched it — and ‘Squid Game’ is already Netflix’s most watched title of all-time.
The report reveals that 132-million profiles viewed at least 2-minutes of the series within the first 23 days of its release.
‘Squid Game’ will generate value for Netflix by helping to attract and maintain new subscribers, and now that it’s a viral sensation, it will be no surprise if the company starts to develop ‘Squid Game’ videogames, memorabilia, and spin-offs.
Then there is the all-but-inevitable release of an eventual season 2.
The show has also been providing Netflix with endless viral YouTube content, including a 24/7 livestream of Seong Gi-hun licking a honeycomb.
The irony that a series all about crippling financial debt becoming Netflix’s biggest financial boon of all-time is almost as big of a meme as ‘Squid Game’ itself.
At the end of the day, it’s well-deserved. ‘Squid Game’ lives up to the hype.
